The Archbishop of Perth, Roger Herft, announced in a pastoral letter to the diocese that he will step down with immediate effect. His personal decision comes following the Royal Commission of Institutional Responses to Sexual Abuse enquiry concerning his time as bishop of the Diocese of Newcastle (1993 - 2005).

A former priest of the Diocese of Canberra & Goulburn has pleaded guilty and been convicted of 15 charges of historic child sexual abuse. He was sentenced in Wagga Wagga District Court on 11 October 2016.

If the plebiscite goes ahead, Archbishop Philip indicates that Christians should vote according to their conscience and that it is proper for the Parliament to honour the result.
