Charter
The Commission for the Environment was established under the “Care for the Environment
Ordinance” passed by the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn in 2007
and assented to by Bishop George Browning. The Commission has the following terms of
reference:
The Diocesan Commission for the Environment will work to promote a Christian
theology of the environment and a sense of responsibility for environmental issues,
both at local and global levels. It will seek to provide objective guidance on
how the Church might creatively address the problems and challenges that face our communities.
The Commission will promote the Christian obligation to nurture and care for the environment
at three levels in the Church:
· Church as an institution or organisation
· Church as faith community, and
· Church as an influential party in the development of community
and governmental attitudes and policies.
The Commission is an advisory rather than a legislative body and sees its role as:
· Supporting Christian people in the Diocese in their consideration of environmental issues
and what action should be taken as individuals, as a Church and as a nation.
· Providing information to individuals, parishes and other bodies in the Church to
enable Christian people to make informed decisions on matters that have an
environmental impact.
· Acting as an advocate for Creation on moral and spiritual aspects of an issue.
