Bishop Trevor Edwards

Bishop Trevor Edwards has a core diocesan role focusing on developing new and creative expressions of faith.

He first came to Canberra in 1972 to work in the National Archives but his calling to the priesthood led him to Moore Theological College where he gained a ThL(Hon) and a BD (London).  His Moore College thesis explored the writings of classical Anglican theologian, Richard Hooker.  His MTh research focused on Anglican ecclesiology.

Trevor has had varied on-the-ground parish experience in four very different Sydney parishes, including student work at St Barnabas’, near Sydney University.  As rector of St John’s, Camden, he exercised a wider diocesan role on the Wollongong Anglican Regional Council, as Area Dean and on the Macarthur Anglican School Council.  He chaired the Diocesan College of Preachers.

From 1996 he was Archdeacon of South Sydney, working with 52 Anglican churches of all faith traditions to support clergy, develop lay leadership, oversee financial and property decisions and revitalise vulnerable inner west parishes.  As Archdeacon for Ordination he managed the process for those exploring ordained vocation.  He actively contributed to several General Synod Commissions for the National Australian Church.

Trevor has energetically taken up Bishop George’s brief to encourage outreach and renewal in the parishes of Canberra-Goulburn Diocese.  He provides pastoral support to clergy and works with parish leadership to develop strategic thinking and action.  As Chair of the Creating Confidence in Christ Taskforce, he coordinates and inspires contemporary initiatives.  Bishop Trevor contributes actively to diocesan planning, to Bishop-in-Council and serves on the General Synod’s Fresh Expressions Australia Board.

He is married to Ruth with four adult sons, two married in Sydney and two studying at ANU.
